"The Terror"
By: Dan Simmons

I really enjoyed this book, which is a fictionalized horror version of the 1845 Franklin arctic expedition. The book is based on the information the author had at the time, (an obvious example of new information that came up after he had written and published the book was the discovery of the two ships featured in the book about five to six years after the book was first published). I also think he gave one of the main characters the only happy ending possible given we have no idea what happened to the character in real life and it’s properly safe to say that he died with the rest of the ships crews rather than being the only person to survive.

It’s a very long and very dense book, which took me a long time to read – certainly a lot longer than I normally would with most books that I read, to the point that I was really annoyed I couldn’t re-new the book (it was a library book) as there were a lot of holds due to the new TV series (mini-series?) based on this book. I would have really liked to have taken my time finishing it and am actually kicking myself that I only borrowed it from the library rather than having bought it.

I highly recommend this book, especially if you like his books and/or horror/historical books that take a while to read.
