"The Gunslinger: The Dark Tower"
By: Stephen King

After hearing so much about this series – and being a big Stephen King fan – I finally decided to start reading the first book in the Dark Tower series. Despite everything I had already about it I hadn’t really heard much about the plot, (I know how the series ends in the very last book and I am aware that King wrote himself into the series in one of the later books but that’s really it).

I don’t think that this book was quite what I was expecting, though I have no real idea what I was expecting which doesn’t help. I did enjoy it a lot and because I knew it was part of a larger series that I was planning on reading anyway I wasn’t upset that doesn’t seem to be any real plot in this book at all beyond the fact that the main character was chasing the man in black and was heading towards the Dark Tower too, and the fact that it have a real ending it just stopped a touch after he finally does catch up to the Man in Black and talks to him.

It actually seems more like the first quarter or third of one of his longer books which has just introduced the main character(s), described the fantasy world the books are set in, and started to describe the overall plot rather than an individual book in and of itself. So basically expect this book to be interesting world building and character introduction rather than what I would expect to be a proper plot driven book, and it is not in any way a standalone book.
