"Carrion Comfort"
By: Dan Simmons

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was great and was able to easily finish it despite the books length - it's 800 pages of small print.

For a horror story it's quite subtle in a way that works incredibly well in a book, but wouldn't be nearly as good a fit for a movie. Especially given the books length it properly works a lot better for people who are fans of horror books to begin with, as I can imagine people who enjoyed Dan Simmons' science fiction books having trouble with this book if they're also general horror fans.

Plot wise it's essentially a variation on two different themes - vampires, which is the main intended one, and the paranoid/conspiracy theory idea that there is a powerful group of people controlling events on earth for their own benefit. It's also an incredibly complicated story line with a large number of characters, but he deals with all of this very well and the book is well written.
