Anno Dracula
6th November 2013
"Anno Dracula"
By: Kim NewmanThis is an alternative history horror story, where all of the characters from various books, (horror books/stories in particular), really exist. The biases for this story is that in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Dracula won and Anno Dracula starts three years later, after he had married Queen Victoria and has essentially taken over England.
I really enjoyed this book, especially given that I am a massive horror fan and Anno Dracula is really well written. It is significantly above the average quality of most horror books. I do have a very minor quibble about the way that Kim Newman did come across as stuffing in references to as many other books or short stories that had been published up to the date the book is set as he possibly could. But it is a very minor complaint on my behalf and pretty much the only negative thing that came up at all, which I think says a lot the quality of the story as a whole.
I enjoyed it enough that I decided to go straight on to the sequel, Anno Dracula: The Bloody Red Baron, straight away.
